Minimally Invasive Surgeries (MIS) 

Minimally invasive surgeries encompass surgical techniques that limit the size of incisions needed.  Benefits of this approach include reduced wound healing time, decreased pain and reduced risk of infection. Surgery by definition is invasive, and some operations require larger incisions referred to as "open surgery".   These larger incisions can be painful, become infected and can increase the amount of time spent in the hospital.

Minimally invasive surgeries such as laparoscopic surgery and robot-assisted surgery have been enabled by camera-based technologies.   The cameras in these systems provide video images during surgical procedures.

​

As a surgeon is 100% dependent on seeing the surgery via these cameras, their ability to make decisions hinges on good image quality.  As the practice of minimally-invasive surgery has grown, so too has the requirements for camera systems with better imaging.

Improving image quality with Fluorescent Dyes

To improve image quality, manufacturers of MIS equipment have updated their camera systems to include capabilities such as HD Video, 4K Video, 3D Video and Near Infrared  (NIR) capabilities.

​

While HD, 4K and 3D terminology typically refers to the visible aspect of the video system, NIR is unique in that it refers to the infrared spectrum not viewable by the human eye. 

​

In NIR video systems, a fluorescent dye such as Indocyanine green (ICG),  fluoresces when the imaging system illuminates the ICG with a specific wavelength.    The NIR mode combined with fluorescent dyes provides surgeons extra information for real-time surgical decision making.

Tissue Reveal Technology: Innovation in Fluorescence

Much like ICG and other fluorescent dyes, Tissue Reveal Technology (TRT) provides fluorescence to improve images and supply additional information to the surgeon.

​

What sets  TRT apart from fluorescent dyes is that TRT embeds fluorescence into the surgical tool.  This provides fluorescence without the use of dyes and does not require batteries or external power supplies.

​

Most importantly, TRT has the added benefit of trans-illuminating tissues to provide information such as tissue depth, tissue quality, anatomical borders and sub-surface pathology.
